the republicans in the house back. president obama keeps talking about how republicans on the other side they are trying to stir up these fights. no they are not. they are keeping the promises they made to the voters who sent them here. for them to throw up hear hands we are going to spend more money without these drastic cuts that would be them to going back on their word with their voters. washington is messed up it's broken. nobody is focusing on things they should be focusing on. it is an out of control train wreck. i feel they through their hands up in the air expect president obama, republicans in the house and let's see how we can make this work without giving up huge compromises in their principles. >> if nobody wants to give up we are not getting anywhere. >>> thanks. have a great day. >> right now a dress rehearsal is underway for expert inauguration ceremonies in washington. live pictures as they practice the inauguration parade. that is where the president of the united states will sit with his panel as the parade on pennsylvania avenue will pass by. they are rehearsing it to

, everybody's talking about what kind of approach is obama going to take this second term. is he going to be conciliatory? or is he going to be mr. tough guy? >> he wants to get things done by being tough and even confrontation. in the first term he tried to change the tone of washington as the outcider, sort of by a combination of aloofness and steady thought. now it's in your face. and he's going to be that way with joe biden at his side. because this is how he validates his presidency. things like health care have to be implemented. things like gun laws and so forth have to be passed. he's decided that the way to get it done is to confront the republican party which is in a weakened state right now. chris: if he hits them hard, charles krauthammer said he's doing this not just to get his goals achieved but to crack the other party. to force them to choose and take the suburbanites as i said in the opening and force them to sit at the side where the hard right or somewhere in the center. crack them. do you think he's up to that, too? >> i agree with howard -- what howard said and i a

person to talk about this at least today was colin powell when he talked about the issue of race and gop and what he saw as some of the enflamed code words that gop folks had been using in talking about president obama that might land differently with african-americans than they do with the general public, so it is i think a question about framing, but i also think it's got to be about specificity. the gop, for instance, now talking about spending cuts. are they prepared to say the "m" word? are they prepared to talk about medicare and are they prepared to talk about social security? so in some ways they are dancing around and being vague about entitlement and spending cuts but have been really loathe to get down to specifics. >> nia, there you go. you had a name there, colin powell. maybe that's the person you'll add to the list. >> stay with us. don't go anyway, ari, nia and matt. still ahead, how will the united states react to vice president joe biden's gun safety recommendations that will be coming out we expect on tuesday. we'll pick it up there when we come back. the place for pol

his recommendations to president obama this tuesday on ways to curb gun violence. coming up about month after the school shootings in connecticut, speculation is growing on what he will propose and also the arguments on sunday political talk shows. peter doocy has more on the plan expected to be unveiled this week. is the nra changing their tune on gun control? >> reporter: no, they are not. david keen is still steamed that obama administration is putting emphasis on it. he doesn't think he is tag their concerns seriously. >> we wish instead of talking about guns specifically that they question that they would address what can we do to prevent these kinds of things in the future. the evidence shows that an assault weapons ban are not going to do that. what will do it is doing something about a broken mental health system that allows people that potentially violent to be the streets. >> reporter: furthermore, the nra is making it clear they don't think there are enough members of congress that favor an assault weapons ban to pass one. >> gregg: it's quite the face-off. is the nra's

is proposing would have stopped the massacre at sandy hook. president obama is targeting the rights of law-abiding citizens instead of what caused the violence. that is a very strong response from someone who's talked about as a 2016 potential candidate. >> and he also accused the president of abusing his executive power in the 23 actions. when you read the 23 actions, frankly, these are very weak directives. there's not much more the white house could do. they've got a whole bunch of things out there, but to call it an overreach is a big, big stretch there. but you're right, andrea, that's presidential politics. the most important responses, though, on this front have come from the two people in charge of putting legislation on the floor of the house and the senate. and speaker boehner's spokesperson said we'll be happy to look at any proposals that pass the senate. well, what did harry reid say last weekend about voting on any bills having to do with gun legislation? they are not going to vote on anything unless they know it can pass the house. here we are, stalemate. >> exactly. >> back
